Side Event “Presiding an International Court or Tribunal”

25 October 2017: The Hague Academy of International Law, in collaboration with the Permanent mission of Mexico to the United Nations and the Permanent mission of France to the United Nations, held its first “Side Event” on October 25th between 13:15 and 14:30 hours on the United Nations premises, in New York, on the occasion of the United Nations International Law Week.

Diploma of the 2017 Summer Courses on Private International Law

The Diploma Ceremony of 2017 Summer Courses on Private International Law was held on August 18th, 2017. Mr. Felipe Albuquerque (Brazil) was awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The jury was presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy Prof. Jean-Marc Thouvenin and composed of Prof. Horatia Muir Watt and the Directors of Studies, Prof. Laura Carballo Piñeiro and Prof. Geneviève Saumier.

Diploma of the 2017 Summer Courses on Public International Law

Mr. Peter Tzeng, attendee of the 2017 Summer Courses on Public International Law, has been awarded the Diploma of the Academy on Thursday, July 27th, 2017. The Diploma was awarded to him by the jury presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy, Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin and composed of the following personalities: Professor Brown Weiss and the Directors of Studies, Professor Diane Desierto and Professor Franck Latty.

Newly Elected Australian Member of the Curatorium

At its last meeting on May 19th, 2017, the Curatorium elected a new Australian member. Ms. Hilary Charlesworth, Laureate Professor at Melbourne Law School and Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University, succeeds H.E. Judge James Crawford who held the seat from 1999 to 2017.

French Courses at the Alliance Française

The Alliance française in The Hague offers the possibility to register for French language courses before or after the Summer Courses of the Academy. This is useful to know if you plan to arrive earlier or if you wish to extend your stay in The Hague later.

Symposium – 8 March 2017

On the occasion of International Women's Day, as established and specifically promoted by the organization of the United Nations, the Academy held a Symposium on "Women's Human Rights and the Elimination of Discrimination on the 8th of March at its premises in The Hague. The event was generously sponsored by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond Foundation. All speeches and presentations were delivered either in French or in English depending on the speakers’ preferences, with simultaneous interpretation provided by experienced interpreters.

New President and New Member of the Curatorium

The Curatorium, at its last meeting on January 21st 2017, elected its new President: Professor Yves Daudet, succeeding Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, as well as a new member: Professor Yuko Nishitani, Professor at Kyoto University, succeeding Professor Shinya Murase.

The Academy Welcomes Its New Secretary-General

As of January 1st, the new Secretary-General of the Academy took office. Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Professor at Paris-Nanterre University, has been appointed by the Academy’s Curatorium to succeed Professor Yves Daudet who occupied this position from 2005 to 2017. A farewell ceremony for Professor Daudet and to welcome Professor Thouvenin is scheduled to take place in the Academy’s Auditorium on Friday 20 January 2017.

Newly Elected Dutch Member of the Curatorium

The Administrative Council of the Academy elected the new Dutch member of the Curatorium. Professor Nico J. Schrijver, professor at the University of Leiden, succeeds Professor A. (Teun) V.M. Struycken who held the seat from 1996 to 2016.

The Diploma Ceremony of 2016 Summer Courses on Private International Law was held on August 19th, 2016. Ms. Brooke Adele Marshall (Australia) was awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The jury was presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy Prof. Yves Daudet and composed of Prof. Symeon C. Symeonides and the Directors of Studies Prof. Sabine Corneloup and Prof. Max Scherer.The closing speech of the 2016 Summer Courses was delivered by the Secretary-General, followed by a speech of the President of the Administrative Council, Mr. Bernard Bot, in his honor.

Two attendees of the 2016 Summer Courses on Public International Law, Ms. Xuexia Liao and Ms. Andrijana Mišović, have been awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The jury was presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy Prof. Yves Daudet and composed of H.E. Judge Mohamed Bennouna and the Directors of Studies Prof. Margaret A. Young and Prof. Anne-Thida Norodom.

Special Short Courses on European Union Law and Comparative Law

his year, for the first time, The Hague Academy will organize two special short courses on European Union Law and Comparative Law, exclusively for the attendees of the Private International Law Period of the Summer Courses. The lectures of the Private International Law Courses often refer to EU Law. This can be a source of difficulty for those Academy attendees who come from non-European countries or from countries where this field of law isn’t taught. To help attendees better understand the courses of the Private International Law period, the Academy has decided to offer a short ‘crash-course’ at the start of the period on the fundamentals of European Union Law. This course is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 31st, 2016, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
