The passing of Professor Emmanuel Gaillard

The Academy presents its sincere condolences to the family and close friends of Professor Emmanuel Gaillard, who passed away on April 2, 2021.

Every international lawyer should have a copy in his or her personal library of his famous Special Course on the Philosophical Aspects of the Law of International Arbitration, published in French in Volume 329 (2007) of the Collected Courses of the Academy, as well as in the “Pocket Books” collection of the Academy in 2008.

In 2019 during the summer session, Emmanuel Gaillard came to attend the lectures, meet the students and enjoy the atmosphere of the Auditorium again, with the perspective of the General Course he was preparing for the summer session of 2021. The global health crisis led us to postpone the scheduling of his General Course for one year, to the summer of 2022. Unfortunately, fate has decided otherwise. We are losing a prominent figure in international law, and a friend. We are deeply saddened by this news. The Academy will pay a special tribute to Professor Emmanuel Gaillard in summer 2022.
