Passing of H.E. Judge Shigeru Oda

It is with deep sadness that the Academy was informed of the passing of Judge Shigeru Oda on 4 September 2025 in Japan. Judge Oda, Member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law (from 1989 to 2001), served as a Judge of the International Court of Justice from 1976 to 2003, including a term as Vice-President from 1991 to 1994.

Judge Oda delivered two courses at the Academy, the first one on “International law of the resources of the sea”, published in 1969 in Volume 127 of the Collected Courses, the second on “The International Court of Justice viewed from the bench (1976–1993)”, published 1993 in Volume 244 of the Collected Courses.

The Academy, along with the Members and former Members of the Curatorium, expresses its sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
