Karan Godara – Scholarship beneficiary – 2020 Winter Courses

As a research scholar focusing on international criminal law, the esteemed scholarship program of The Hague Academy enabled me to engage with professors and practitioners of international law from across the globe. A field visit to the International Criminal Court and the doctoral networking sessions were particularly helpful in advancing my research interests.”

Suzanne Zhou – Diploma Awardee – Summer 2018

I attended The Hague Academy’s summer session in 2018, and was selected for the Directed Studies sessions and the Diploma exam, eventually being awarded the Diploma for that year. It was a wonderful place to be for anyone interested in international law – in addition to the courses in the morning, there was a very full program of seminars, embassy visits, and social events in the afternoon – at many times it was difficult to choose which event to go to. I particularly enjoyed the Directed Studies sessions, which provided an opportunity to discuss international law in-depth with some brilliant colleagues, as well as the Diploma exam, which puts your knowledge of international law to the test in a five hour written exam, and then a one-hour oral exam. But the highlight was really the sense of community and connection with people from all around the world who share your interests – I am still in touch with many of the friends I made at the summer session and I have lots of fond memories of waiting to catch the tram to the Peace Palace together in the mornings and going to visit different places in The Hague the evenings. I was delighted to come back (virtually) as one of the Directors of Research for the Academy’s first online Centre for Studies and Research on Epidemics and International Law, and although we aren’t able in 2020 to recreate some of the experience of being physically present in The Hague (such as the beach party!), it has been a privilege to work with such a dedicated group of researchers from around the world to make sense of the times we live in now.

Noël Gautier Gueazang Nguepi – Doctoral scholarship beneficiary – Summer 2017

The doctoral scholarship programme of the Academy is undoubtedly the most advanced fellowship in international law. It is an enriching experience that offers doctoral students interesting opportunities to exchange with teachers and practitioners of international law. One leaves with in-depth knowledge, enabled to produce a quality doctoral thesis.”

Olga Bondarenko – Attendee – Summer 2016

For me, the Academy is all about people. Prominent professors give lectures, you get to meet top practitioners, can ask judge a question, and make friends from all over the world. Here, among all of them, it is as if you feel the very heartbeat of international law. And it inspires and gives you a sense of direction for further achievements.
