Doctoral Scholarships
The Academy offers a dedicated category of scholarship, known as Doctoral Scholarships, to PhD candidates from non-OECD states who are currently residing in their home country and are expected to defend their thesis by 31 December of the year following the award.
These scholarships enable recipients to advance and complete their research in The Hague during July and August. Beneficiaries are granted full access to the extensive collection of the Peace Palace Library, including the complete series of the Academy’s Collected Courses and the comprehensive digital catalogue. Scholarship holders are permitted to attend the General Course as well as any Special Course directly related to their thesis topic.
Since the primary purpose of the Doctoral Scholarship is to allow recipients to focus on their thesis, scholarship holders are not permitted to participate in the Directed Studies sessions. The Academy will verify that recipients reside in The Hague for an uninterrupted period of two months and that they make regular use of the Peace Palace Library’s Reading Room and resources. A certificate of attendance will be issued to those who demonstrate consistent engagement with the Library during their stay.
All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in one of the two working languages: English or French.
Period: 8 weeks (1 July – 1 September 2026)
Scholarships are in the amount of €2250 (€35 per day) + half of the traveling expenses, up to a maximum of €910.
All doctoral scholarship applications for summer 2026 must be submitted before January 31st 2026, 23:59 hrs. The Hague time (GMT+1). Candidates must not have previously received a Doctoral Scholarship from the Academy.
