The Academy Welcomes Its New Secretary-General

As of January 1st, the new Secretary-General of the Academy took office. Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Professor at Paris-Nanterre University, has been appointed by the Academy’s Curatorium to succeed Professor Yves Daudet who occupied this position from 2005 to 2017. A farewell ceremony for Professor Daudet and to welcome Professor Thouvenin is scheduled to take place in the Academy’s Auditorium on Friday 20 January 2017.

Diploma of the 2016 Summer Courses on Private International Law

The Diploma Ceremony of 2016 Summer Courses on Private International Law was held on August 19th, 2016. Ms. Brooke Adele Marshall (Australia) was awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The jury was presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy Prof. Yves Daudet and composed of Prof. Symeon C. Symeonides and the Directors of Studies Prof. Sabine Corneloup and Prof. Max Scherer.The closing speech of the 2016 Summer Courses was delivered by the Secretary-General, followed by a speech of the President of the Administrative Council, Mr. Bernard Bot, in his honor.

Special Short Courses on European Union Law and Comparative Law

his year, for the first time, The Hague Academy will organize two special short courses on European Union Law and Comparative Law, exclusively for the attendees of the Private International Law Period of the Summer Courses. The lectures of the Private International Law Courses often refer to EU Law. This can be a source of difficulty for those Academy attendees who come from non-European countries or from countries where this field of law isn’t taught. To help attendees better understand the courses of the Private International Law period, the Academy has decided to offer a short ‘crash-course’ at the start of the period on the fundamentals of European Union Law. This course is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 31st, 2016, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Opens 2016 Advanced Course on International Criminal Law

On Monday, May 30th 2016, the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, Mr. Volker Türk, delivered the opening Keynote Address for the second edition of the Advanced Course on International Criminal Law (Special Focus: International Criminal Justice, Migration and Human Trafficking). The address was followed by a panel discussion on the topic of International Law and the Migration Crisis, for which Mr. Türk was joined by Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill and Professor Peter Rodrigues. The Advanced Course is generously sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the Municipality of the City of The Hague.
