Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Professor at Paris-Nanterre University, has been appointed by the Academy’s Curatorium to succeed Professor Yves Daudet who occupied this position from 2005 to 2017. The Administrative Council of the Academy elected the new Dutch member of the Curatorium. Professor Nico J. Schrijver, professor at the University of Leiden, succeeds Professor A. (Teun) V.M. Struycken who held the seat from 1996 to 2016.

The jury was presided by the Secretary-General of the Academy Prof. Yves Daudet and composed of Prof. Symeon C. his year, for the first time, The Hague Academy will organize two special short courses on European Union Law and Comparative Law, exclusively for the attendees of the Private International Law Period of the Summer Courses. The lectures of the Private International Law Courses often refer to EU Law. This can be a source of difficulty for those Academy attendees who come from non-European countries or from countries where this field of law isn’t taught. To help attendees better understand the courses of the Private International Law period, the Academy has decided to offer a short ‘crash-course’ at the start of the period on the fundamentals of European Union Law. This course is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 31st, 2016, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At its last meeting, which was held at the beginning of June 2016, the Curatorium of the Academy elected three new members to the seats previously occupied by Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Prof. Erik Jayme and H.E. Judge Xue Hanqin. The newly appointed members are H.E. Judge Mohamed Bennouna, Prof. Katharina Boele-Woelki and Prof. Bing Bing Jia.
Read moreOn Monday, May 30th 2016, the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR, Mr. Volker Türk, delivered the opening Keynote Address for the second edition of the Advanced Course on International Criminal Law (Special Focus: International Criminal Justice, Migration and Human Trafficking). The address was followed by a panel discussion on the topic of International Law and the Migration Crisis, for which Mr. Türk was joined by Professor Guy Goodwin-Gill and Professor Peter Rodrigues. The Advanced Course is generously sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the Municipality of the City of The Hague.

The Academy mourns the loss of Boutros Boutros-Ghali today, February 16th, 2016. Mr. Boutros-Ghali, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, was a member of the Curatorium since 1982 and served as its President from 2002 until his death.

At its last meeting in January 2016, the Curatorium of the Academy elected Dr. Beat Hess as its new Vice-President. The members of the Curatorium congratulated Dr. Hess on his appointment and warmly thanked his predecessor, Prof. Dr. Erik Jayme, for his dedication to the Academy over the years. Mr. Jayme was a member of the Curatorium from 1998 to 2016.
