Signing Ceremony Held Between the French Embassy in the Netherlands and the Academy

At a ceremony held on 18 October 2024 at the Peace Palace, H.E. François Alabrune, Ambassador of France to the Netherlands, presented the Academy with a very substantial voluntary contribution of 75,000 euros, enabling the Academy to finance the holding of the Moot Court competition before the International Criminal Court, in partnership with the Court, as well as legal French courses, in partnership with the Alliance Française.

Academy Side Event at UN Headquarters on 23 October 2024

The Hague Academy of International Law, the Permanent Missions of the Philippines and the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, with the kind sponsorship of the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Portugal, the Principality of Andorra, the Principality of Monaco, the Republic of Poland, Senegal, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, the Togolese Republic, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, Uruguay and Vietnam will hold its annual “Side Event” at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Diploma awarded during the 2024 Summer Courses on Public International Law

At the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Summer Courses on Public International Law, Stefan Robert McClean (New-Zealand) was awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The Jury of the Exam consisted of Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Secretary-General of the Academy, Professors Eyal Benvenisti (General Course) and Professors Kubo Mačák and Alain-Guy Tachou Sipowo (Directors of Studies).

Opening of Registrations for the 2024 Advanced International Criminal Law Course

The Hague Academy of International Law has decided to offer, with the financial support of the French Embassy in the Netherlands, an advanced training course in International Criminal Law from 21 to 25 October 2024.

Signing Ceremony between The Hague Academy and the Office of the Solicitor General of the Republic of the Philippines

On 10 June 2024, the Academy signed an agreement with the Solicitor General of the Republic of the Philippines to organise and hold an Advanced Course on international law for members of the Office of the Solicitor General in Manila in November.

The Curatorium, at its meeting on 24 May 2024, elected its new President: Professor Diego P. Fernández Arroyo, succeeding Prof. Yves Daudet, as well as a new member: Prof. Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, Professor at the University of Geneva.

Advanced Courses on International Law in the Philippines

The Hague Academy of International Law, in partnership with the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the Judicial Academy of the Philippines (PHILJA), inaugurated its first Programme on Demand of Advanced Courses in the Philippines on Monday 19 February, together with leading figures from the inviting judicial and academic institutions.

Election of New Members of the Curatorium

On 18 January 2024, the Curatorium of the Academy elected three new members: Patrícia Galvão Teles, Professor at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and Member of the International Law Commission; Nilüfer Oral, Director of the Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore and Member of the International Law Commission; and Mohamed S. Abdel Wahab, Professor at the University of Cairo and Dean of the Africa Arbitration Academy. The Secretariat of the Academy congratulates them.These new members succeed Professors Beat Hess, Djamchid Momtaz and Mohamed Bennouna respectively.

At the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Winter Courses on International Law, Mr. Máté Csernus (Hungary) was awarded the Diploma of the Academy. The Jury of the Exam consisted of Prof. Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Secretary-General of the Academy, Prof. Campbel McLachlan (General Course) and Professors Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida and Fuad Zarbiyev (Directors of Studies).

Elections of ICJ Judges

The Academy warmly congratulates H.E. Judge Hilary Charlesworth (member of the Curatorium), H.E. Mr Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu (invited to teach at the Academy in the near future), Professor Sarah Hull Cleveland, H.E. Mr Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo Verduzco (who taught at the Academy in 2023) and Professor Dire Tladi (who taught at the Academy in 2021) on their re-election or election by the General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council to serve as Judges of the International Court of Justice for a term of nine years.

The topic of this year’s Side Event is “Peaceful Dispute Settlement: The Indispensable Courts and Courses of the Peace Palace”.
